Fallon Ambulance Awarded Equipment from National Homeland Security Grant

MILTON AND QUINCY, MA, ISSUED AUGUST 30, 2004…Fallon Ambulance Service, the region’s largest independent, family-owned business, was recently selected to receive a grant of equipment from the department of Homeland Security. The grant was instituted as part of the greater effort to further enhance the preparedness and response capacity for potential large-scale emergencies at the local level.

As the largest, independently owned ambulance service in the region, Fallon was notified of the grant through Boston Emergency Medical Services (BEMS) and Metro-Boston EMS Council (MBEMSC). The grant will provide medical and personal protective equipment. The program will increase the capacity of the area’s EMS community to respond to an act of terrorism or other large-scale emergency.

“This grant further demonstrates the state’s confidence in our services,” said Peter Racicot, Senior Vice President of Business Development for Fallon Ambulance Service. “We are proud to be the emergency service providers that the surrounding communities count on and we are committed to maintaining the highest level of safety for all of our patients.”

Fallon was chosen as the recipient based on stringent eligibility requirements instituted by the BEMS and MBEMSC. Applicants were required to demonstrate licensing in EMS Region IV, as defined by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; maintain continuous 24-hour advanced life support (ALS) service in at least one EMS Region IV community; and the agency must use procedures to conduct Medical Director quality assurance reviews of all ALS calls. Fallon is also expected to adhere to strict rules and regulations regarding the use and storage of the granted equipment.

In addition to the grant, BEMS and MBEMSC also chose Fallon as the designated service to house a large cache of medical equipment. Fallon will be expected to provide a secure, climate-controlled environment for the equipment storage, and agree to transport the cache to the scene of a major incident.

Equipment allocations to Fallon are as follows: 8 Portable Ventilators, 20 Pulse Oximeters, 3 LifePak 12 Defibrillator/Monitors and 300 ER1000 Hooded Escape Masks. The equipment grant was funded by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety; through homeland security reserves.
