Fallon Introduces GPS Navigation to it's Fleet

Fallon Ambulance Service, the region's largest independent, family-owned ambulance service provider, today announced that it is introducing the latest in GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technology to its ambulances and chair car fleet, designed to further trim response times and increase overall efficiency.

The 70-year-old, third-generation family owned business has selected the StreetPilot c340 GPS as its technology of choice.

The StreetPilot offers text-to-speech capability, which notifies the driver, by voice, of accidents, road construction, and weather-related traffic delays in advance, so that the driver can select an alternate route if needed. Standard GPS features include verbal directions including the name of the street, where to turn and in what direction. And, should a driver miss a turn, the StreetPilot offers the capability of automatically calculating a new route to the destination.

The StreetPilot c340 is pre-programmed with data of the entire United States, including nearly six million items in its database. And, specifically, Fallon has pre-programmed location, direction and key information in these GPS units for each of the facilities with whom they contract – including hospitals and nursing care facilities.

The units are portable, lightweight and easy to operate.

Peter Racicot, Senior Vice President of Business Development, said, “This is an important step for us. We understand the importance of time in what we do, and we believe this advancement will help us make the most of every minute and every hour that we work.”

He cited GPS advantages as including reduced response times, reduce transit times, increased efficiency, greater sense of comfort and trust for customers and patients among the advantages. “We believe this is the wave of the future for emergency medical transportation and are glad to be at the forefront.”

An additional option for the GPS is a POI (Points of Interest) locator, which identifies schools and warns if a driver is traveling too fast. The StreetPilot c340 has a bright, 3.5-inch diagonal display with touchscreen; dual integrated speakers for high-quality voice prompts; and an internal lithium-ion battery for out-of-car route planning. The units have a retail value of more than $600 each.
